Our Process
Counseling Orientation: We view the counseling process as forming an alliance with you to explore the nature of your problem(s). Although we will spend much time exploring specific problems that brought you into the counseling office, significant attention will be given to the nature of relationships with other significant people in your life. According to our theoretical orientation, many of the forces and dynamics that have influenced the complexity and intensity of your problem(s) are rooted in relational issues. Foundationally, we believe you are made to relate in a satisfying and self-giving manner. This is the source of your greatest joy but also of your deepest problems. We will explore how your relational style both benefits and interferes with your capacity for pleasure. This is also meant to give you hope, that by not only dealing with the problem itself, we will aim at the source of the problem. We believe that certain problems can have a physical component as well. In such cases, medical consultation will be advised. Our time together will be primarily conversational.
General Explanation of Sessions: Each session lasts 50 minutes. We will usually meet once a week. The first session will begin with all the necessary paperwork and a general inventory of what is going on in your life, and what you want to get out of our time. If either of us decide during the first session that this is not a good fit to continue to work together then there will not be a fee for the initial session. The length of your treatment is difficult to project. Therapy length will be dependent upon your goals, motivation, external support, personal work outside of sessions, and the cronicity of problems.
